Arnstedt, Östra Karup Interconnection Diana Orving (born 1985) creates sculptural installations that carry a sense of presence. In Trädgårdshuset at Galleri Arnstedt, she shows a series of new sculptures sewn in iron mesh. The bodies of the sculptures turn and twist, they strive up towards the ceiling and flow out over the floor. Like dancing shadow figures, they relate to each other and create a choreography in the room. The transparency of the iron mesh gives a tactile impression and contributes to a contemplative mood that is further enhanced by the shifting and flexible structure of the works. "I understand form through my hands and find my way to the intersection where feeling and thought meet. I use form and movement to both express and understand states of mind, relationships, mental and physical processes. The lightness of textiles has enabled me to work on a large scale. I am fascinated by large formats, where the volume kind of overpowers me, I create the conditions for losing control over what I create. In the loss of control something exciting arises, the uncertain, the unpredictable attracts me. There is a special state in the loss of control, a mixture of deep concentration, surrender and curiosity. I work choreographically with my sculptures and I think that the sculpture can portray a relationship, a conflict, a fear or a longing. Diana Orving Tempesta Gallery is pleased to announce the Swedish artist's first solo show in Italy on November 24, 2022. After years of discovering and exploring the possibilities of textile materials as an art form, Diana Orving is now taking her artistry one step further. In her new work Becoming for Tempesta Gallery she has created a giant hanging shape, a form of textile sculpture resembling a giant placenta, the tree of life that all comes from, embodying the link between mother and child. It is composed of a variety of jute qualities, from light see-through weave to dense and stiff qualities of the biodegradable textile. The shape of the human placenta, that gives life to the growing human body, is also the shape of the trees that give life to us all, the lung and earth connector of the earth body. The materiality of her work is central, with subjects ranging from the ephemeral and light, almost flowing of her previous art pieces, to the darker, heaviness of the jute. The creation is a form of collaboration between the material, the motif and the ideas, all merged in together. The large pieces are full of mobility and movement, an intrinsically fluid aspect that the artist herself describes almost as a form of choreography. Improvisation and intuition are central aspects of her artistic process, that often is expressed through a form of exploration, an on-going dialogue between her and the works. It is almost as if they have a life of their own, with pieces such as Observer I, II, that feels almost like they are looking at you. “I often feel observed by the pieces in my atelier. I feel their presence, – they have freed themselves from their frame and stretch out towards me, following my every move”, says the artist. In her sculptural framed works, titled Presence I, II, III, we get to explore the moving landscape of something resembling the female body, an intimacy between the fabric and the skin, folding like sand in the desert, like waves of the ocean. The textile sculptural paintings made of silk, painted with oil, seem to pulsate and breathe, liberating themselves from the constraints of the framework. Textile art meets sculpture, meets traditional framed paintings. “In the textile works mounted on frames, I look to create a field of tension and intimacy between the piece and its viewer. A landscape to get sucked into, or a volume that makes you want to touch it,” Orving herself explains. The female body, and motherhood has been a theme of Diana’s since the birth of her first child, and she went through her second pregnancy during the process of Introspection, a form of co creation between with her own bodily and mental transformation and the work that came to life through her fingers: ”What I wanted to express was my emotions and sensations in the ultimate form of intimacy and loss of control. I experienced that there is knowledge in your body that goes beyond what you could intellectually comprehend. The intrinsic lightness of the fabrics made it possible for me to create these large scale volumes. The larger they grow, the less in control am I. It is almost like creating a new organism that force me to cross boundaries and limitations.” Diana Orving (1985) is born in Stockholm, Sweden, and had a successful career as award winning avantgarde fashion designer (amongst others Elle designer of the year), with a brand under her own name, before her artistic work turned more into pure art, where she has spent her time, as a full time artist during the last two years. She works associatively in an exchange between techniques, materials and formats such as textile sculpture, painting and costume when she investigates the symbiosis of the tactile and the visual, of the body and space. Diana Orving is self taught and develops her own techniques. She chooses the fabrics that she refines in different ways, by dying and washing the materials several times to obtain specific textures and effects. She works mainly with high quality natural fibers such as cotton, hemp, wool and metal fibers from stocks of left-over material, using existing and sustainably recycled material. She has exhibited her work in major shows at Varbergs Konsthall, Sven Harrys Konstmuseum, Galleri Arnstedt, Nordiska Galleriet Art in Sweden, amongst other places, and has created site-specific sculptural art drapes for Guide Michelin star restaurant Aira in Stockholm. What is your own relationship to magical thinking? That's how my thinking system works, for better or for worse. It is a little dysfunctional to think that you can influence events through actions. Children engage in that, it´s something you are supposed to put aside as an adult to become a more enlightened being. But the magical thinking lies as a filter for my entire reality. I have always engaged in the act of encapsuling moment. In my head, I have a large index of frozen moments that, already when they happened, I decided to save. I pondered a lot about existential things even as a small child. There has always been a fear of impermanence in me. Encapsulating moments is, I suppose, a way of nailing down time. Like pinning a butterfly to a piece of cardboard to save that brief moment of life. In the exhibition, the theme is visible in my silk cocoons, into which I have sewn notes with secret wishes. That “cocoon-concept” is something I've dealt with for a long time, in different forms. Vows and spells written on rolls of paper, sealed with my hair. The cocoons offer a projection surface – what is my sealed desire? What does your process look like in concrete terms? How do you start a work/piece? My process is organic and intuitive. The piece is shaped in my hands. I often think that the sculptures should grow into their own organisms, with their own will and temperament. Something that I need to submit to. I have an initial thought where I give the work a starting point. It can be the material, the beginning of a shape, a color. It becomes like a a first chord in a piece that I then get to follow and see what intention and what temperament it has, in order to then help the creation come into being what it wants to be. My feeling is that I almost become an instrument for the work. A doula perhaps? I don't have a rule for how it should look between point A and point B. I don't know beforehand how it is going to take shape. I don't draw anything before, I shape everything with my hands while working. The seams that flow through the pieces are elastic, never straight. More like blood veins or the lines of a tree, living lines. The form that I have in my head and the form that arises and that I cannot always predict, also work in interaction. Textile is exciting if I compare it to bronze or plaster, they represent a finished form. But my textile sculptures are transformative. They can become something new depending on how you hang them. One can find different movements in them. They have a large amount of inherent capabilities. What materials are you working with in this exhibition? Partly silk, which I have worked with for a long time. I color it myself, mixing pigments to achieve the exact shades I'm after. Those works are sculptural paintings, I paint with oil paint on the silk. I think of painting as a kind of lighting where thin layers of white make the form emerge from the blackness. I also work in burlap, because there is an earthy materiality in it. How we are anchored in the earth and time. I have been inspired by the olive tree on Placa Cort, it is six hundred years old. It is fascinating to get lost in its labyrinths. What caused the twist on the trunk to grow to these proportions? I have tried to find a way to translate the tree into my language and created fragments of my own tree inside the gallery in burlap. The work is in three parts and is entitled "Fragments of a tree". I also work with the shadows on the walls. What exists but cannot be touched. Then I found this black plastic material that made me think of fishing nets, sun protection for plants, packaging. There are certain shapes that recur in your art. Like the spiral shape, trilobite, uterus, womb...what do you think about it? In many ways, my works are about origins, about motherhood. The cocoons I made may bring to mind a womb. The original, archaic. My own placenta from when I gave birth to my children really grabbed me, it really does look like an absolutely amazing tree! Imagine that the body can produce an extra organ… You understand why the placenta is called the tree of life. The nerve fibers look just like the roots down into the soil. It is like a reminder that everything belongs together, everything is plant power. But the motherhood I dealt with is not only the private but the universal. We humans as a creation of the whole. To be one us in one body. The interlinking of generations, the umbilical cord.... We pilot life on. There is a loss of control in it that is both terrifying and comforting. The cupped shape of a trilobite, is something that feels both ancient and futuristic. It signals both vulnerability and protection. How I feel about it is connected to how I feel about my children, there are all possibilities there, something that is strong and vulnerable and private. The shield which is an armor that covers its inside, just like the pupa. And the spiral form also reappears in my works. It could be a shell. The winding road. The narrow passages. The inexorability of everything going on, with or without us. Your mother was a textile artist, how has that influenced your artistry? I am very influenced by my mother. To grow up between looms, with sewing machines and fabrics close at hand all the time. I can still remember every scrap of fabric that was kept in my mothers baskets; the structures, the colors, the materials, the feeling, the smells. The sensations they gave me are imprinted in me. She had three children, we all climbed the warp of the loom. To me it was playful, to create alongside of her, and it is an approach that I have been able to maintain, even though I have refined my technique over the years. I have always connected sewing with care. The fact that you choose to spend so much time on something. The time you weave in, sew into every little stitch. The act of love in that. What I do is really let childhood spread out before me, with my own language. My thoughts find outlet when my hands are busy. I think with my hands. I think of something I read, like“If you don't know where you are going, close your eyes and listen very carefully. Follow the invisible thread laid out before your feet”. To create is to seek the unknown, and I understand the unknown a little more by giving it a form or an expression. I intuitively search for my sources with my hands and listen. When I spend time doing this, it also becomes a deepening, a meditation in approaching, understanding and marveling at, for example, the lines of a being or a tree. In the Large Studio – where Milles’s figures seem to hover between heaven and earth – a dialogue opens up between different materials and expressions, between past and present. Just as Milles created works that reach for the sky, Orving’s sculptures occupy the room with a buoyancy that seems to defy gravity. Orving sews textile layers of silk, linen and abaca – a fibre from a banana plant – into organic shapes that evoke clouds, wind and plants in motion – or birds in flight. The title Celestial Bodies refers to Milles’s lifelong fascination with winged creatures in myth and nature, and to the idea of art that strives upwards, toward the sky and heavens. Here, two artistic practices meet in the cosmic and the human – celestial bodies in transformation and metamorphosis, serving both as stars and as symbols of humanity’s desire to transcend boundaries.  by Sara Stridsberg I. My latest novel Farewell to Panic Beach begins at Milles playing bears, right at the entrance to Berzelii Park. The small granite bears tear at each other’s throats and rake hard claws towards one another’s eyes, yet they look so happy as they tumble about – like a single celestial body among celestial bodies. II. I found myself thinking of those bear cubs when I visited her studio recently. The artist stood beside her blackbird, looking like a bird herself. She wore a black fur vest that resembled wings, her body small and bird-like as she moved about in her floating worlds of membranes and clouds, which were momentarily piled in drifts on the floor, waiting to take flight again. III. The blackbird was silent where it stood, in its own world. The blackbird is the angel of reality, writes the poet Wallace Stevens. IV. If Michelangelo saw a complete sculpture within a marble block, then in Orving’s work we get a glimpse of worlds that once existed but have since been lost and possibly might re-emerge. I think of Camille Claudel’s sculpture The Waltz. Below the waist, the man and woman are swept up in the mad waltz of love, merging into a single lump of clay. As they dance, they revert to stardust and earth. Similarly, Diana Orving captures both the movement, its cessation and a possible continuation. V. That is probably why everything in Orving’s work hovers, rising upwards as it defies gravity, like a dream of suspend- ing death. Everything except the blackbird, which is the only one here that ought to be flying. VI. Perhaps we find ourselves immersed within the mem- branes of the body, or far out in space among nebulae and stellar reefs. A world of umbilical cord spheres and solitary luminous shells. VII. Nevertheless, her celestial bodies arouse a singular thirst, a hunger – desire, one might call it. Not a desire to possess anything, but rather to race through the halls of Millesgården and eat it all up, like the witch Pomperipossa herself, munching on clouds and seashells and spirals and light. VIII. It’s as if the artist is saying: It’s not dangerous. Don’t be afraid. IX. At first she was a fashion designer. The feeling of wings and floating was present even then. Was that why everyone coveted her dresses and coats – because they all wanted to fly away? Like the lady, the man, and the ape, who during the final costume change transforms into a bird that takes off and flies away in Marie-Louise Ekman’s work Striptease. X. Play, currents, infinity. XI. Birds of light flying against glass, but without being crushed. XII. It is evening now, but this blackbird does not fly. It stands alone in a corner. It seems to be the only thing here that must submit to gravity. Clumsy, blind and tired. With- out sky, without eternity. Surrounded by dreams, clouds and tattered thoughts, by all this Orvingian longing. XIII. Please, please call me when you reach heaven. She primarily works with textile sculpture and painting, exploring themes of memory, origin, and the subconscious, where the tactile meets the visual and the body’s relationship to space is central. While sculpture is often understood through its surface, Orving turns her attention inward – toward structure, flow, and movement, treating form almost as a living organism. Through seams that resemble veins or branching systems, she creates immersive environments that invite both physical and sensorial presence. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in New York, Milan, the Netherlands and at Art Brussels, as well as in Swedish institutions and art galleries around the country. Exhibition concept &Milles is a new exhibition series that places the total work of art Millesgården – bequeathed to the Swedish people in 1936 – in active dialogue with the present. Contemporary artists are invited to create site-specific installations in relation to the unique environment, where the Artist’s Home and the surrounding sculpture park can also serve as sources of inspiration.
